No, the idea of waiting for “readiness signs” is a relatively modern idea and many toddlers never show clear signs at all which can leave parents stuck waiting, unsure when to begin.

Historically, the average age for potty training was much earlier, around 18 months. It’s only since the widespread use of disposable nappies that the average age has increased to nearly 3 years. Despite common advice to wait until 2.5, there is no evidence that waiting makes potty training easier.

In fact, current UK government guidance recommends supporting toilet learning between 18–30 months, focusing on gentle exposure, routine and skill-building rather than waiting for a child to suddenly become “ready”.

This approach is based on following each child’s individual development and awareness, so you can move through the stages together while allowing each child to progress at their own pace.

It’s completely normal for one child to move ahead of the other and this method allows for that. 

You don’t need a separate approach specifically for twins, just one that supports each child as an individual.

As this is a gradual introduction, you don't need to clear your calendar. In the beginning, 10 minutes per day is all you need to spend on potty training, this will gradually increase but can slot into your routine around work and childcare.
