Potty Training at 18 Months: Why Earlier Might Be Easier
Sep 05, 2025
Most parents assume potty training should happen around age 2½ or 3. That’s what health visitors often say, that’s what the books suggest, and it’s what many friends and family members do. But what if waiting that long actually makes potty training harder?
Many toddlers who train earlier (around 18–24 months), make faster, smoother progress. Why? Because at this stage, your toddler is still curious, cooperative, and eager to copy you. By the time they’re older, independence is in full swing. “No!” becomes their favourite word, and the idea of stopping play to use the potty often feels like a battle.
Parents who wait often notice:
-
More resistance when introducing the potty later
-
Toddlers holding in wees or poos as a power struggle
-
Longer training periods and more accidents
-
Frustration for both parent and child
On the other hand, toddlers who are introduced earlier (from 18 months) usually see the potty as just another part of life. They’re not yet set in their ways, they want to imitate you, and they enjoy gaining independence. Training becomes a natural transition, not a dramatic shift.
That doesn’t mean you dive in on day one with full potty training. At 18 months, the focus is on gentle steps that prepare your toddler and build skills. Things like:
-
Introducing the potty as part of their routine
-
Encouraging them to notice when they’re wet or dirty
-
Building awareness of body cues
When you take it step by step, you set your toddler up for success — and avoid the stress, bribery, and battles that often come with waiting until later.
